Senior Project: Graphic Notation

This project is based upon my favorite musical piece, Chopin's Ballade in F Minor, Op 52.

The goal of graphic notation is to take classical music and make it accessible to all. When listening to the piece, you can follow the main melody by paying attention to the rise and fall of the bars.

While the full piece is not transcribed, each of the following art pieces depict the main melody, which repeats in different variations throughout the piece.

The initial melody is shown in the first graphic; melody notes are shown in red on the outside, while supporting base notes are shown in grey on the interior.

The following art pieces show the same melody, but more of the variations.

This piece and the one above look very similar- which is intentional. The only differences can be seen in the grey variations, which show the newest harmony line, which is introduced on the second variation in the music.

Not all parts of a musical piece are the same; there is a bridge that sends the listener to different melodies before returning to the original.

Shown here is the chordal bridge that utilizes quick runs for dramatic effect before returning to the final end.

The end is approaching with this final variation, where the main melody notes are only shown sporadically and quickly. The bass notes are also shown more sporadically.
